A bone breaking from an accident or a fall is a frightening moment — both the patient and the people around them panic. But taking the right steps in that moment is extremely important, because the wrong action before reaching a hospital can make the injury worse.
How to Recognize a Fracture
- Severe pain that increases with movement
- Swelling or discoloration at the injured site
- A visible change in the shape of the limb (bending or an unnatural angle)
- Inability to bear weight on or move the injured limb
- Hearing a "crack" sound at the time of the break
Urgent First Steps
- Keep the patient still: Try to prevent movement of the injured area as much as possible.
- Make a temporary splint: A firm piece of wood, a book, or rolled cloth tied on either side of the injured area can temporarily keep the bone from moving.
- Use ice to reduce swelling: Ice wrapped in a clean cloth can help reduce pain and swelling.
- Get to a hospital quickly: Reach an orthopedic and trauma specialist as soon as possible.
What You Should Never Do
- Never try to straighten the broken bone yourself
- Do not force the injured limb to bear weight or try to walk on it
- If there's an open wound, don't apply any ointment or medicine — just cover it with a clean cloth
- Don't make the patient wait a long time — delay can worsen complications
Treatment Process at the Hospital
After reaching the hospital, an X-ray is usually done to determine the type of fracture. Treatment is then planned based on the nature of the injury — some fractures heal with a plaster or cast, while more complex fractures require surgery. When treatment follows AO Trauma-certified protocols, the bone has a better chance of healing correctly and quickly.
Remember — an open fracture (where the bone breaks through the skin), heavy bleeding, or complete inability to move the limb are true emergencies. Go directly to the nearest hospital emergency department without delay.
